Executive
Management
Manfred R. Koller, Ph.D.,
is the Company’s President and Chief Executive Officer and is a member of its Board of Directors.
Dr. Koller was the founding executive of the company and since establishing operations in 1999 has assumed various executive management roles including Chief Technology Officer, Vice President of R&D and Chief Operating Officer.
Prior to joining Cyntellect, Dr. Koller served in various management roles at Advanced Tissue Sciences, Aastrom Biosciences and Baxter International, in each case being responsible for developing
and/or commercializing novel proprietary products which utilized the unique capabilities of living human cells. Dr. Koller holds a Ph.D. degree in Biochemical Engineering and a B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering,
both from Northwestern University. Dr. Koller is an elected fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biomedical Engineers (AIMBE) and serves on the Board of the National Center for Applied Cytomics at Purdue University.
Jim Linton, Ph.D., M.B.A.,
joined the Company in July 2004 as its Chief Business Officer and Head of
Business Development. Prior to joining the Company, Dr. Linton was the Vice
President of Business Affairs for Protometrix, Inc. from March 2003 to July
2004. He served as Vice President of Business Development at Genicon Sciences
from November 1999 to November 2002. He holds a Ph.D. degree in molecular
genetics from Emory University, an M.B.A. with emphasis in technology marketing
from the University of California, Davis and a B.S. degree in Biological
Sciences from Muhlenberg College.
David Voris,
joined the Company November 2007 as its Chief Financial Officer. David has 22 years experience as a financial professional, primarily with companies in the life sciences. Prior to joining the Company, he was the Chief Financial Officer of SynergEyes from February 2005 to November 2007. David also served as Chief Financial Officer of Laser Diagnostic Technologies from October 1999 until its sale to Carl Zeiss Meditec in December 2004. Additionally, David held positions in finance with Alaris Medical Systems and Metracor Technologies, and began his career at Deloitte & Touche as a CPA.
Bob Scalese, joined the company as Vice President of Engineering and Manufacturing in January, 2008. Bob has over 20 years experience in the design and manufacturing of medical, diagnostic and analytical instrumentation products. Prior to joining the company, he was Senior Director of Engineering at Gen-Probe from November, 2000 to April, 2007. Bob also served as Director of Engineering at Denver Instrument Company from June, 1997 until its sale to Sartorius in 1999. Previous to that Bob held positions as Manufacturing Engineering Manager and Director of Research and Development at Hamilton Company from July, 1985 to June, 1997. Bob received his degree in Mechanical Engineering from Florida Institute of Technology and an MBA from Pepperdine University.
Board of Directors
Robert Patzig, joined as a member of the Company’s Board of Directors in July 2007 and was appointed Chairman of the Board in February, 2008. Mr. Patzig serves as a Senior Managing Director and Chief Investment Officer of Third Security LLC. Mr. Patzig joined Third Security as a Managing Director upon the company’s founding in 1999. Additionally, Mr. Patzig is a Director of Synchrony Corporation and is a Director of the Virginia Biotechnology Association, a non-profit industry advocacy group. In connection with his work for Third Security, Mr. Patzig has previously served as Chairman of Intrexon Corporation and as Co-Chairman of Howe and Rusling, Inc., a registered investment advisory firm; and as Director of Market Research and Analysis at GIV Holdings, Inc. From 1994 until 1996 he worked as an instructor of English at Virginia Tech. Mr. Patzig received a B.A. in Philosophy and English and a M.A. in English from Virginia Tech.
Dr. Paul Billings, MD, Ph.D., joined as a member of the Company’s Board of Directors in December, 2007. Dr. Billings was recently appointed Executive Chairman of Signature Genomic Laboratories LLC. Until August 2007, Dr. Billings was Senior Vice President for Corporate Development and Strategy at Laboratory Corporation of America Holdings (LabCorp) and Senior Geneticist at LabCorp’s Center for Molecular Biology and Pathology. Prior to joining LabCorp, Dr. Billings was Vice President for Life Sciences and Clinical Affairs at WIPRO, Ltd., via its subsidiary WIPRO HealthScience. Dr. Billings was Co-Founder of GeneSage, Inc. (www.genesage.com) where he acted as Executive Vice President and Chief Scientific and Medical Officer. He was recently appointed by the HHS Secretary to the Secretary’s Advisory Committee of Genomics, Health and Society and also serves on the NIH Study Section on Salivary Diagnostics. Dr. Billings was Editor-in-Chief of GeneSage’s GeneLetter, a leading on-line magazine of genetic medicine, society and culture. He is a Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of California at Berkeley (Adjunct). Dr. Billings received his MD and PhD degrees from Harvard University in 1979. He completed his clinical training in Internal Medicine and Medical Genetics at the University of Washington in Seattle in 1983. He serves on several other boards in the non-profit and profit sectors.
Matthew Crisp, joined as a member of the Company’s Board of Directors in April, 2008. As a Managing Director at Third Security, LLC, Mr. Crisp works closely with private and public portfolio companies and reviews opportunities for investment. Mr. Crisp serves on the Board of Directors of Synchrony, Inc., a Roanoke, Virginia-based high-tech engineering company. Additionally, Mr. Crisp works closely with Third Security ICT Ventures, LP, a private investment fund that concentrates on investments in the information and communication technology industry. Formerly, Mr. Crisp worked closely with NewVa Capital Partners, LP, an early-stage private equity fund focused on investments in the NewVa region of southwestern Virginia, and served as the Vice President of Finance and Operations and on the Board of Directors of Intrexon Corporation, a Blacksburg, Virginia-based biotechnology company. Mr. Crisp received a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Finance from Radford University, where he currently serves on the President's Advisory Council and the College of Business and Economics Advisory Board.

Koller is the Company's founding executive, currently serves as its President
and Chief Executive Officer (CEO). See "Executive Management"
Bernhard O. Palsson, Ph.D., the Company’s founder, served as the Company’s Chairman of the Board since the Company’s inception in 1997 until the fall of 2007, and he continues to serve on the Board. Dr. Palsson is professor of Bioengineering and Adjunct Professor Medicine at the University of California, San Diego. Dr. Palsson co-founded Aastrom Biosciences (NASDAQ: ASTM) in 1988, where he served as the Vice President of Developmental Research for two years. Dr. Palsson is also the founder of Genomatica, a company that is focused on in silico biology. Professor Palsson is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and holds a Ph.D. degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin.
