David Voris
Interim CEO
Dave joined the Company November 2007 as its Chief Financial Officer and is currently serving as Interim CEO. Dave has 22 years experience as a financial professional, primarily with companies in the life sciences. Prior to joining the Company, he was the Chief Financial Officer of SynergEyes from February 2005 to November 2007. Dave also served as Chief Financial Officer of Laser Diagnostic Technologies from October 1999 until its sale to Carl Zeiss Meditec in December 2004. Additionally, David held positions in finance with Alaris Medical Systems and Metracor Technologies, and began his career at Deloitte & Touche as a CPA.
David Weber
VP of Sales and Marketing
David joined Cyntellect as Interim Vice President, Sales and Marketing in August 2009 after having spent over 30 years in senior executive roles with life science companies such as Pharmacia, Amersham, GE Healthcare, and Stratagene, as well as with e-commerce pioneer, Chemdex. Most recently, David served as President & CEO of Eksigent Technologies, Vice-President of the Life Science Practice for The Linus Group, as well as President of his own consulting firm, Weber & Associates. David's core expertise is in international marketing, sales, and channel strategy coupled with financial management. David has a B.S. in Biochemistry with highest honors from Rutgers University where he was a Henry Rutgers Scholar and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.
Fred Koller, Ph.D.
Chief Technology Officer
Fred is the Company’s Chief Technology Officer and is a member of its Board of Directors. Dr. Koller was a founding executive of the company and since establishing operations in 1999 has assumed various executive management roles. Prior to forming Cyntellect, Dr. Koller served in various management roles at Advanced Tissue Sciences, Aastrom Biosciences and Baxter International, in each case being responsible for developing and/or commercializing novel proprietary products which utilized the unique capabilities of living human cells. Dr. Koller holds a Ph.D. degree in Biochemical Engineering and a B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering, both from Northwestern University. Dr. Koller is an elected fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biomedical Engineers (AIMBE) and serves on advisory boards for Northwestern University and Purdue University.
Bob Scalese
VP of Engineering and Manufacturing
Bob joined the company as Vice President of Engineering and Manufacturing in January, 2008. Bob has over 20 years experience in the design and manufacturing of medical, diagnostic and analytical instrumentation products. Prior to joining the company, he was Senior Director of Engineering at Gen-Probe from November, 2000 to April, 2007. Bob also served as Director of Engineering at Denver Instrument Company from June, 1997 until its sale to Sartorius in 1999. Previous to that Bob held positions as Manufacturing Engineering Manager and Director of Research and Development at Hamilton Company from July, 1985 to June, 1997. Bob received his degree in Mechanical Engineering from Florida Institute of Technology and an MBA from Pepperdine University.
David A. Spector, MBA
Director of Business Development
David is Cyntellect’s Director, Business Development and joined the Company in February, 2009. Before joining Cyntellect, Mr. Spector held a director level position at Gen-Probe Incorporated where he spent four years helping to lead the company’s business and corporate development activities. Prior to Gen-Probe, Mr. Spector co-founded and managed a boutique institutional broker/dealer, WCM Partners, specializing in financial research on the technology and healthcare sectors for large institutional clients. David also spent time with Idec (now Biogen Idec) where he helped the company create a $100 million corporate venture group. Mr. Spector also worked with Avidyne Corporation, Wyeth, and US Filter in a variety of management capacities. Mr. Spector received his B.S. in Physiology and Neuroscience from the University of California, San Diego and an MBA from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Sloan School of Management where he was awarded the school’s prestigious Patrick McGovern award for entrepreneurship.
Gary Bright, Ph.D.
Senior Director of Applications Development
Gary joined Cyntellect as Director of Cell Biology and is currently Senior Director of Applications Development. Since joining the company in 2005, Dr. Bright has led the development of applications focused on live cell imaging and manipulation including processes, reagents, and instrumentation. Prior to joining Cyntellect, Dr. Bright served in various management roles as Chief Science Officer at Bioptechs, Inc. from 2004 – 2005 and Scientific Director and Director of the Screen Development at Cellomics, creating and leading the assay development and molecular biosensor programs from 1998 - 2003. Earlier, Dr. Bright was a professor at Case Western Reserve University Medical School for 9 years. Dr. Bright has held post-doc and research scientist positions developing novel early stage technologies at the Center for Fluorescence Research at Carnegie Mellon University and has a Ph.D. degree in Cell and Developmental Biology from Kansas State University.
Board of Directors
Randal J. Kirk
Mr. Kirk joined as a member of the Company’s Board of Directors as Chairman in September, 2008. Mr. Kirk is Senior Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Third Security, LLC, an investment management firm founded by Mr. Kirk, since March 1999. Additionally, Mr. Kirk founded and became Chairman of the Board of New River Pharmaceuticals Inc. (previously traded on Nasdaq prior to its acquisition by Shire plc in 2007) in 1996, and was President and Chief Executive Officer between October 2001 and April 2007. Mr. Kirk began his professional career in the private practice of law. Previously, Mr. Kirk served as a member of the Board of Directors of Scios, Inc. (previously traded on Nasdaq prior to its acquisition by Johnson & Johnson) between February 2000 and May 2002. Mr. Kirk also currently serves in a number of additional capacities, including as a member of the Board of Directors of Clinical Data, Inc. since 2002 and Chairman of the Board since 2004; as a member of the Board of Directors of Halozyme Therapeutics, Inc. (Nasdaq: HALO) since May 2007; and as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Intrexon Corporation since February 2008. Mr. Kirk has served on the Board of Visitors of Radford University since July 2003, was Rector of the Board from September 2006 to September 2008, and has served on the Board of Directors of the Radford University Foundation, Inc. since September 1998. He was appointed to the Virginia Advisory Council on Revenue Estimates in July 2006, and was appointed as a member of the Board of Directors of the Virginia University Research Partnership in July 2007. Mr. Kirk received a B.A. in Business from Radford University and a J.D. from the University of Virginia.
Paul Billings, MD, Ph.D.
Dr. Billings joined as a member of the Company’s Board of Directors in December, 2007. Dr. Billings was recently appointed Executive Chairman of Signature Genomic Laboratories LLC. Until August 2007, Dr. Billings was Senior Vice President for Corporate Development and Strategy at Laboratory Corporation of America Holdings (LabCorp) and Senior Geneticist at LabCorp’s Center for Molecular Biology and Pathology. Prior to joining LabCorp, Dr. Billings was Vice President for Life Sciences and Clinical Affairs at WIPRO, Ltd., via its subsidiary WIPRO HealthScience. Dr. Billings was Co-Founder of GeneSage, Inc. where he acted as Executive Vice President and Chief Scientific and Medical Officer. He was recently appointed by HHS Secretary Leavitt to the Secretary’s Advisory Committee of Genomics, Health and Society and also serves on the NIH Study Section on Salivary Diagnostics. Dr. Billings was Editor-in-Chief of GeneSage’s GeneLetter, a leading on-line magazine of genetic medicine, society and culture. He is a Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of California at Berkeley (Adjunct). Dr. Billings received his MD and PhD degrees from Harvard University in 1979. He completed his clinical training in Internal Medicine and Medical Genetics at the University of Washington in Seattle in 1983. He serves on several other boards in the non-profit and profit sectors.
Matthew Crisp
Mr. Crisp focuses on corporate development and works closely with private and public portfolio companies and reviews opportunities for investment. Mr. Crisp serves on the Board of Directors of Synchrony, Inc., a Roanoke, Virginia-based high-tech engineering company, Cyntellect, Inc., a San Diego, California-based biotechnology company, Levelvision, a Roanoke, Virginia and San Francisco, California-based out-of-home digital media company, and on the Board of Managers of ECDS, LLC, an Alpharetta, Georgia-based enterprise software company. Formerly, Mr. Crisp worked closely with NewVa Capital Partners, LP, an early-stage private equity fund focused on investments in southwestern Virginia, and served as the Vice President of Finance and Operations and on the Board of Directors of Intrexon Corporation, a Blacksburg, Virginia-based life sciences company. Mr. Crisp received a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Finance from Radford University, where he currently serves on the the Radford University Board of Visitors, the College of Business and Economics Advisory Council, and on the Radford University Foundation Board of Directors and as the Chairman of its Investment Committee.
Fred Koller, Ph.D.
Dr. Koller joined as a member of the Company's Board of Directors in August 2006. Dr. Koller is one of the Company's founding executives, currently serves as its Chief Technology Officer (CTO). See "Executive Management"
Bernhard O. Palsson, Ph.D.
Dr. Palsson, the Company’s founder, served as the Company’s Chairman of the Board since the Company’s inception in 1997 until the fall of 2007, and he continues to serve on the Board. Dr. Palsson is professor of Bioengineering and Adjunct Professor Medicine at the University of California, San Diego. Dr. Palsson co-founded Aastrom Biosciences (NASDAQ: ASTM) in 1988, where he served as the Vice President of Developmental Research for two years. Dr. Palsson is also the founder of Genomatica, a company that is focused on in silico biology. Professor Palsson is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and holds a Ph.D. degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin.
